TRENCH CPR04-00-110 Capacitor/Filter Protection Relay

• Core Function: Detects the failure of individual capacitor elements within a bank before a major fault occurs.
• How it works: When internal capacitor fuses or elements blow, it creates a current imbalance. The relay calculates this imbalance across various topologies (such as H-bridge, single star, or double star configurations).
• Compensation: It features built-in natural unbalance compensation to prevent false tripping caused by manufacturing tolerances of the capacitors.

• Capacitor Thermal Tracking: Monitors the root-mean-square (RMS) current to calculate and track the thermal stress on the capacitor dielectric material.
• Reactor & Resistor Protection: Extends thermal replica monitoring to connected tuning reactors (inductors) and damping resistors within harmonic filter circuits.

• Overcurrent Protection: Shields the equipment from standard system short-circuits and heavy overcurrent faults.
• Overvoltage Protection: Protects the capacitor units from dielectric breakdown caused by sustained power-frequency overvoltages or switching transients.

• Backup Security: Monitors the status of the associated circuit breaker. If the relay issues a trip command but the breaker fails to open within a set time, it activates a backup trip signal to isolate the entire busbar section. 

• Time Stamping: Logs faults, trips, and setting changes with high-precision time stamps.
• Fault Analysis: Allows engineers to retrieve event data to determine exactly which phase or component caused the system shutdown.
